Girl From The North Country (15)

The Plaza presents a season of musicals in association with CinemaLive:

Girl From The North Country

It’s 1934 in Duluth, Minnesota. We meet a group of wayward travellers whose lives intersect in a guesthouse filled with music, life and hope.

Written and directed by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson and featuring Tony Award-winning orchestrations by Simon Hale, Girl From The North Country reimagines 20 legendary songs of Bob Dylan as they’ve never been heard before, including “Forever Young,” “All Along The Watchtower,” “Hurricane,” and “Like A Rolling Stone.” It’s 1934 in Duluth, Minnesota. We meet a group of wayward travellers whose lives intersect in a guesthouse filled with music, life and hope. Experience this “profoundly beautiful” Broadway production (The New York Times) brought to vivid life by an extraordinary company of actors and musicians.

Synopsis:

The story takes place in a guesthouse inhabited by a collection of wayward souls, some passing and some permanent. At the centre of the piece we meet the down-on-his-luck guesthouse proprietor Nick Laine, his wife Elizabeth (riddled with a form of dementia), his alcohol-soaked son Gene and his nineteen year old, adopted, black daughter Marianne, who is also pregnant.

The Depression has taken its toll on those that dwell in the guesthouse and desperate times call for desperate measures. Nick tries to strike a deal with a much older citizen of Duluth, Mr. Perry, to marry off his adopted daughter, whilst he struggles with Elizabeth's condition and Gene's inability to find a job and earn a living. The supporting cast of characters includes a formerly incarcerated boxer striving to get back on his feet and make a comeback, a suspicious bible-flogging reverend, the Burke family and their feeble-minded son, and the widow Mrs. Neilsen, Nick's not-so-secret lover. Each of these colorful personalities is in search of their own way out of this real-life purgatory, by any means necessary.

Showing on Thursday 21st Novmber at 8pm, tickets £12.

The Zoo Keeper's Wife - Hollocaust Memorial Day (12A)

To acknowledge Hollocaust Memorial Day The Plaza will be showing "The Zookeeper's Wife"

As war brews over in 1939 Warsaw, and while life is still running its course, the Germans are gradually making their presence felt, with Adolf Hitler secretly preparing for the invasion of Poland. Under those volatile circumstances, the couple of Jan Zabinski and Antonina Zabinska continue with their daily routine as owners of the Warsaw Zoo; however, their life's work, and the city, will turn to ashes when the Luftwaffe's horrific Stukas begin to hammer the capital. Now, with the zoo liquidated for the war effort, and many of its animals tragically perished, what was once a menagerie, will now serve as a sanctuary, where the pair of veterinarians can hide the persecuted Polish-Jewish people in plain sight. Indeed, that was the dangerous plan of the two altruists, who, regardless of the consequences, refused to wither before the Nazi menace, and sheltered three hundred Jewish men, women, and children right under the noses of the enemy. Will the world remember the zookeeper's wife?

This film is rated as “12A” – Suitable for 12 Years and Over. No one under the age of 12 can watch a 12A unless accompanied by an Adult.

Wicked (PG)

A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold stories of Oz's most famous (or infamous) characters, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good Witch. A cautionary tale about love, friendship, and trust, Wicked effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every story.

Directed by Jon M. Chu.

Starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey & Jeff Goldblum.

This film is rated as “PG” – Parental Guidance, Suitable for General Viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
